Staying Safe on the Roads This Holiday Season: A Message from ECTC

Traffic control crew working during the holiday season in regional Queensland, ensuring safe road conditions for summer travellers

The holiday season is a time for family, travel, and well-earned rest — but it’s also one of the busiest and most dangerous times on Australian roads.

With more people hitting the highways, school zones empty, and regional traffic increasing, the team at East Coast Traffic Control is reminding everyone to take extra care behind the wheel this Christmas and New Year.

Whether you’re heading up the coast, staying local, or working through the break, road safety matters more than ever this time of year.

Our crews are still out there — please slow down

While many Aussies are enjoying time off, traffic control crews, emergency responders, council workers and contractors are still on the job — keeping roads safe, works moving, and communities connected.

You’ll still see cones, VMS boards and high-vis crews out in the heat, setting up for:

  • Holiday period road maintenance
  • Emergency repairs from summer storms or floods
  • Utility upgrades
  • Special event support
  • Long-haul transport assistance

We ask everyone to slow down around worksites, follow signage, and stay alert — especially in unfamiliar areas or when travelling long distances.

Tips for staying safe this summer

If you’re hitting the road these holidays, here are a few reminders to help keep everyone safe:

  • Plan ahead — holiday traffic and roadworks can add time, so allow extra.
  • Check conditions — especially in regional or flood-prone areas.
  • Stay off your phone — it only takes a second of distraction to miss a Stop/Slow sign.
  • Look out for signage and cones — they’re there for your safety and ours.
  • Be patient — our crews are working to keep things moving safely, not to hold you up.

Thank you to our hardworking crews

To our TCs, TMIs, depot staff and operations teams — thank you for keeping things running during the busiest time of the year.

From early mornings to last-minute callouts, your commitment helps keep road users safe, projects on track, and communities moving through one of the toughest seasons to be on-site.

If you see a traffic controller out there this summer, give them a wave or a smile — they’re doing more than most people realise.

Let’s all get home safely

Road safety isn’t just about rules — it’s about people. Families, workers, tradies, tourists, crews in the sun, and everyone just trying to get where they’re going.

From all of us at East Coast Traffic Control, we hope you have a safe, happy and restful holiday season — and we thank you for helping to protect our people on the road.

FAQs

Are traffic control crews still working over Christmas?
Yes. Many of our teams work through the holiday period to support roadworks, emergency callouts, and regional infrastructure projects.

How can I tell if roadworks are active over the holidays?
Look out for live signage, traffic controllers on-site, and flashing arrow boards. If in doubt — slow down and proceed with caution.

What should I do if I see a traffic control setup while travelling?
Reduce your speed, follow all signage, and be alert to changes in lane conditions or pedestrian activity. Always obey traffic controller instructions.

Does ECTC provide emergency support during summer?
Yes. We can deploy traffic control for storm recovery, flooding, emergency utility access and road damage response across QLD and NSW.

Where does ECTC operate over the holidays?
We remain active throughout Queensland and Northern NSW, including Sunshine Coast, Wide Bay, Far North QLD, and Mid North Coast NSW.
